Syringe Filters

EMS #67000-Series

Introduction

These disposable filter units are ideal for tissue culture media, buffer solution, stain solution, biological fluids and most other aqueous solutions and reagents that are used daily in the EM lab. They have a high burst strength for assured performance and are manufactured to ISO 9002 and GMP standard and 100% integrity tested.

Pore size and membrane type are printed on every syringe and the filters are certified non-cytotoxic and non-pyrogenic.

Applications

Note: Syringe filters are for research only and are not intended for use in human parenteral applications, unless otherwise noted.

  • Dry air or gases filtration and particulate removal (0.45 mm and 8 mm pore size)
  • Ultra cleaning and sterile filtration of liquids (0.2 mm pore size)
  • Small volume filtration of tissue culture media and components, biological fluids and other aqueous solutions
  • Removal of particulates from liquids; microbial reduction

General Instructions

  • When using a syringe for sterile filtration, be sure the blister package is intact before opening it, ensuring sterility
  • Avoid contaminating the filtrate outlet and any attached accessories, such as the needle
  • Filter needs changing when the pressure required to maintain the filtrate flow becomes too high
  • Note: A syringe with a volume of less than 10 ml can generate a pressure greater than the burst rating for the syringe filter housing
  • NEVER reuse or resterilize a syringe filter unit
  • Syringe filters are bi-directional and filter in either direction but once you start filtering in one direction, DO NOT change direction

Specific Instruction for Particulate Removal, Clarification, Prefiltration, and Sterile Filtration of Liquids

  1. Remove a syringe filter from the box.
  2. For liquid filtration, draw liquid into a syringe that has a luer lock connector.
  3. Starting at one corner, peel the protective backing off the blister part.
  4. Hold blister part in one hand and connect syringe to the luer inlet of syringe filter holder.
  5. If needed, attach a sterile needle (for a male luer slip) to the outlet of the syringe filter and remove the protective cap.
  6. To prevent air bubbles and assure proper wetting of the membrane, hold syringe and syringe filter assembly with the luer outlet or needle pointing upwards. Slowly press in the plunger until a bead of liquid exits from
    the outlet or needle.
  7. Filter the contents of the syringe into a flask or other suitable container.
    8. Should you need to spike a closure (first, it must be spikable), disinfect the site to be spiked with a disinfectant such as 70% alcohol.
  8. When filtration is complete, discard the syringe filter holder. NOTE: When working with infectious or radioactive material, follow all rules and regulations for disposal.
