By following a few simple directions, excellent results can be obtained in drying "RC" papers on Doran Dryers.
CAUTION: NEVER PLACE THE EMULSION OF THE PRINT TOWARD THE DRYING SURFACE! DOING SO WILL RUIN THE PRINT AS WELL AS CAUSE IT TO STICK TO THE SURFACE.
If your prints tend to curl excessively, lower the heat setting (in the thermostatically controlled units) or remove them from the dryer sooner (for models without thermostatic control). Place the curled print on a cool, flat, surface; the print will quickly "relax" and flatten.
To adjust the variable heat control just turn the plastic knob in the direction indicated by the arrow. To increase temperature, turn knob clockwise, To decrease temperature and shut off unit, turn the knob counter-clockwise until it reaches a stop.
For best results, squeegee excess water from print, then place on drying surface and cover with canvas apron by placing wire form on inclined surface of dryer side and pressing down. Once the wire form passes the center position spring tension will cause it to maintain the proper apron tension on the print. To release the canvas apron when print is dry just lift the wire form against the spring tension until it passes center and lift up. It is important that constant tension is maintained throughout the drying cycle as the moisture is absorbed by the canvas apron. To maintain even drying time between both surfaces of the twin models, it is advisable to turn the unit over several times during the cycle.
Place print face up on the dryer surface and cover with the apron as stated above until the prints are completely dried. Because of the wide uniform heating area, prints will dry in about four to six minutes, depending upon the grade of paper and the thermostat setting.
Place print face down on the highly polished chrome surface and squeegee excess water with either a print roller or squeegee blade. Cover with canvas apron until dry. For best results, always prepare print by using a wetting agent such as Kodak Photo-Flo in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. It is also important the surface of your dryer be clean and polished to promote the very best gloss. Many products are available for this purpose such as our Premier Ferrotype Polish in aerosol spray cans. Use of this polish prior to drying will eliminate many of the problems inherent to ferrotyping and produce an even and brilliant gloss.
Color prints should be dried face down and only on models which have a drying surface of Chrome on Steel platens. With other models prints can be squeegeed and placed onto an individual Chrome on Steel ferrotype plate. Remove excess water from print and then place the entire plate on the dryer and beneath the canvas apron until dry.
Note: Be sure to remove protective paper from chrome surface before using dryer.
Superior results can be obtained by using Resin Coated paper. Prints dry flat and wrinkle free with a perfect finish.
Place prints emulsion side away from the metal drying surface. Allow sufficient time to dry (15 sec. To 1 min.) depending on heat setting. Remove print from dryer and allow to cool, the print will be flat and glossy.
The dryer's thermostatic control assures undamaged prints, even if they are left in the dryer for prolonged periods. However, extended time in the dryer may cause the paper to curl slightly.
Dry as for gloss above. After print has cooled, spray surface with Premier M16 Matte Spray, observing directions on the aerosol can.
WARNING: RESIN COATED PAPERS CANNOT BE DRIED WITH THE EMULSION SIDE IN CONTACT WITH THE METAL DRYER SURFACE.
