Extran® 300

EMS Catalog #60500

Extran® 300 is a phosphate-free liquid concentrate specially formulated to deal with a wide range of cleaning and decontamination procedures. It can be safely used on equipment and lab utensils made of glass, quartz, porcelain, metal, rubber, and plastic. It easily removes blood, proteins, and even the most stubborn burnt on residues.

Extran® 300 rinses away completely from cleaned surfaces due to its extreme solubility. It is halogen and phosphate-free and is biodegradable. Articles washed with Extran® 300 are safe to use in clinical and biochemical applications – studies have shown no inhibitory effects on critical enzyme reactions.

Directions

General laboratory cleaning

Protein residues (Blood, pus, agar, sera, fermentation meal, bacterial and algae):

  1. Immerse articles for 24 hours in a 5% (50mL/L) or boil for 20 minutes in a 10% (100mL/L) solution
  2. Rinse with distilled or deionized water
  3. Air dry

Silicones (Vacuum seals, mold release agents, greases, protective oils, and polymeric resins):

  1. Remove all traces of silicones from apparatus by immersing them in a 10% (100mL/L) solution heated to 50 degrees C
  2. Over a 2 to 24 hour period, the silicon residuals will be floated off the contaminated surfaces. This procedure is even effective in freeing close ground traps that have become jammed by grease
  3. If required, Extran 300 can be used at strengths up to 50% (500mL/L) concentration in water or in miscible solvents
  4. Rinse cleaned articles with distilled or deionized water
  5. Air dry

Ultrasonic cleaning baths:

  1. Sonicate articles in a 2-5% solution for 10-20 minutes
  2. Cleaning time can be reduced in ultrasonic baths equipped with heating elements
  3. Rinse with distilled or deionized water
  4. Air dry

Distillation residues (Carbonaceous, deposits, salts and impurities in evaporated solvents):

Organic and inorganic residues left behind during the distillation process are especially tenacious, and require an extremely powerful cleaning strategy. It was previously common to discard these articles, as they were considered unsalvageable.

  1. Submerge these contaminated articles completely in a 10% (100mL/L) solution and allow to soak for 24-72 hours
  2. Scrub with cleaning brush and pressure. If any distillation residue still remains, boil articles for 1 hour in a 20% (200mL/L) solution
  3. Power rinse again with distilled or deionized water
  4. Air dry
