Portable Heat Pen
EMS Catalog #72677-10
Introduction
When using your Portable Heat Pen soldering iron, always follow basic precautions. Please read all instructions before using and save for future reference.
Notice
The iron is shipped with the batteries uncharged.
Risk of electrical shock! To reduce the risk of electric shock:
- Do not place or drop into water or other liquid.
- Always unplug this appliance from the electrical outlet when not in use. (Except when charging.)
- Unplug the recharging stand before cleaning.
Danger
When the operating button is pressed, the tip heats to over 900°F almost immediately.
To reduce the risk of burns, fire, electrical shock, or injury:
- Disturbing the internal wires or thermostat may result in battery overheating.
- Use this tool only for its intended use as described in this data sheet.
- Do not hold the tip while pushing the button.
- When you finish soldering, make sure to rotate button back to lock position.
- Do not allow metal object to touch or "short" across the recessed charging contact points. The metal could get very hot.
- Do not lay against any surface after using until the tip has cooled.
- Never operate this tool if the recharging stand cord is damaged.
- Do not attempt to charge this unit with any charger other than the one that is supplied with it.
Installing Tip
- Align tip leads over the terminal holes.
- Push inward and upward until tip is fully seated.
- To remove, pull straight out.
- Note: The tip may be attached permanently to the terminals, if desired. To do this, remove the two terminal screws and take off the two springs. Next, insert the tip into the tip holders, replace the screws and tighten.
Recharging
Note: The recharging stand is designed to be operated on 120 Volts AC, 50-60 cycle.
- Never charge the iron in a recharger stand that is a different color than the iron. The higher charge rate of different colored stands may cause overcharging and overheating of the iron's rechargeable cells, shortening battery life.
- To recharge, place the tool in the recharging stand with the pushbutton toward the front.
- Using the wall plug transformer, plug charger cord into bottom of iron and plug charger only into a 120 Volt AC, 50-60 Cycle receptacle.
- It is best to charge unit when received and leave it in its recharging stand or plugged into wall plug transformer when not in use.
- Soldering iron will not overcharge if left in stand but, if left in the stand and the stand is is turned off or disconnected, the iron will discharge.
Operating the Soldering Iron
- Turn switch button to "USE" position. Depress button to operate. When not in use, turn button to "LOCK" position.
- Soldering on Printed Circuit Boards, Wiring and General Work
- Make sure work is clean and make a good mechanical connection where possible.
- Remove the tool from its recharging stand, depress pushbutton, wait 3-5 seconds and then apply tip to joint that is to be soldered.
- Now immediately apply solder at the point of the tip and the joint so that melted solder will help in heat transfer.
- When solder flows and has wetted connection, remove solder and soldering iron and release pushbutton.
- Soldering cycle should be completed within 15 seconds.
- Repeated heat cycling will reduce solder joint reliability.
- Check your work; a good solder joint should look smooth and bright.
- After connection has cooled, trim off excess wire.
Proper Use and Maintenance Information
- The iron should be used frequently to ensure a longer life of its batteries. Even when you don't solder, it is a good practice to completely discharge the batteries by normal use about once a month. If this is not done, the batteries will gradually lose their maximum capacity. Note: When discharging, do not hold the iron continuously in the ON position without a heat sink to prevent abnormally high tip temperature.
- For fast and accurate soldering, a clean and well-tinned tip is required. Heat and gently wipe with a rag or an emery cloth to clean up. Re-tin to minimize oxidation. Use good quality solder; resin core or solid with the proper flux for electronics work. Apply solder only at the point of the tip. All tips should be kept tinned for fast heat transfer to the work and longest tip life.
- Tip temperature can be controlled by pressing the button momentarily off and on in use. This may be necessary when working with micro printed circuits.
- All tips should be kept tinned for fast heat transfer to the work and longest tip life.
- When soldering, touch only the nose of the tip to the area you are soldering and not the thin sidewalls.
- Note: Do not feed the solder onto the side of the tip. This practice will rapidly eat a hole through the side of the copper tip. Feed the solder onto the very end of the tip at the junction with the work.
Battery Replacement
This product uses a nickel-cadium (NiCad) battery, which must be disposed of properly. In the unlikely event that you have to replace the battery, follow these steps:
- Remove three screws from the case. Remove cover carefully.
- Remove switch contact screw. Lift switch spring and tip holder assembly up and remove from unit.
- Remove the two screws located on the ends of the battery pack.
- Remove the battery pack.
- Install new battery pack with two screws.
- Replace switch spring and tip assembly in case. Caution: Do not touch the other tip to the assembly.
- Replace switch contact screw.
- Replace cover and three screws.
