There are a multitude of scanning electron microscope uses in forensics, a dynamic and multifaceted field that greatly benefits from the precision, higher resolution, magnification, and sample versatility of scanning electron microscopy instruments. Additionally, SEM forensics allows for the non-destructive analysis of specimens and consequently, the repeated analysis of a single sample. Most scanning electron microscopes are also equipped with documentation and imaging software that ensures precise record-keeping, reporting, and data sharing - all integral to forensic investigations. 

SEM forensics is used in the analysis of a number of important forensic specimens, ranging from gunshot residue and tool markings to fibers, textiles, and trace evidence.
